ENTERING THE FOREST

Uganda Log: Tuesday 20 October 2009

Marching with the Batwa, across the tea plantation toward the forest.

Prior to the economic collapse, Uganda had been self- sufficient in food, thanks to its good soil fertility and favorable climate. The Uganda Tea Association, founded in 1948, had identified 200,000 hectares of land as suitable for commercial tea production. These areas are in the northern crescent of Lake Victoria, South and Western Highlands and the West Nile regions

There is a very definitive edge between the tea fields and the forest.

I'm going into the forest for the first time.

Although we began along an established path, the footing was still tricky and we had to duck and dodge many vines and low hanging branches.
