TREE CLIMBING

Uganda Log: Thursday 22 October 2009

They're not going to get me to climb that tree.

Similar to tuber digging for women, the Batwa men revel in climbing trees for honey. They can either see, hear, smell, or just know when there is bee activity high above in the forest canape. They will usually start their climb on large vines adjacent to the trunk of the tree bearing the beehive, then jump over to the main part of the tree. These types of bees do not sting; if they were the kind that do sting, the Batwa would bring up smoldering coals and smoke the bees into a drowsy trance and then throw down the cone and the honey to their awaiting cohorts.
